The SARA Project & B Corp Certification

In today’s world, it is becoming increasingly important to think about the environment and the impact we are all having on it. Now, that doesn’t mean that everyone expects you to become a fanatical eco-warrior-do-gooder, but perhaps one should consider whether to buy something packaged in single-use plastics if there is a readily available, environmentally friendly alternative.

Look back just 10 or 15 years ago and vegetarians and vegans might have been considered fringe communities, at least by popular standards. Now they are practically hipster movements, with foods priced eye-wateringly near Apple like levels. How did this happen?

It isn’t just health-food shops that command such an obsessively passionate audience, willing to spend so much more for comparatively less (at least in volume, I mean, just look at the size of an organic carrot!). Many businesses are now choosing to consider not just the bottom-line, but also the ethics of HOW the bottom line is generated. It subsequently turns out that by doing this, nine times out of ten, actually leads to greater profits!

Having strong ethics and not being shy to shout about them tends to have a polarising effect on audiences.  This is actually a good thing, and many businesses say they would rather have a hundred raving fans than a thousand customers who couldn’t care less where they bought their goods from. If I’m buying from a company for ethical reasons, I’m probably not buying on price.

Proving one’s ethics however is more than just a tweet. An ethical company is one that demonstrates at every level their belief system, from literature, to product, to staff and management – trying to fake this may get you to the start line… but then probably no further.

B Corps is way for businesses to certify these types of credentials, proving that one has the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.

We believe that SARA Ltd is a perfect fit for B Corp status. From her very conception we have always held the strong belief that SARA as a physical product should be as environmentally friendly as possible.  We are planning to use locally grown crops to form the bio-composite materials to build her modular structure. Locally sourced materials, partnerships with like-minded businesses and an open doors policy form the cornerstone for how SARA Ltd endeavours to do business. (Image copyright B Corp)
