Our Stories

Our programmes combine practical work experience with the development of personal skills within a real working environment and we have helped a number of young people to build their careers in Cornwall.

Here are some of our recent stories so far along with some of our current cohort.

Suzanne Yates

Business Administration Trainee to Administrator at Newquay Airport – Age 20

From: St Stephen, Cornwall

Suzanne sees her future in the Business Management Sector, she came to Parnall in order to progress her development and skills within the area, whilst she completed her Open University degree.

Suzanne is full of enthusiasm and had no issue tackling the many tasks involved in administration in order to support the business. Suzanne departed the Parnall Foundation in September 2018 when she was offered a full-time role with Newquay Airport as an administrator.

David Britton

Business Administration Intern to Receptionist for Parnalls Solicitors – Age 24

From: St Austell, Cornwall

David is a highly motivated individual who came to the Parnall Foundation in order to develop his entrepreneurial skillset. He came with an aim to further his career through developing his professional and personal skill sets and experiences to eventually run a business of his own.

Since his time with Parnall David has discovered a liking to customer excellence and recruitment. David has since progressed to a full-time receptionist role based in Launceston with Parnalls Solicitors, which he balances alongside the start-up of his own e-commerce business, White Lion Design.

Will Hosking

Business Administration Intern to Finance Graduate for Hall Hunter Partnership, Reading – Age 23

From: St Michael Penkivel, Truro, Cornwall

As our first Intern Will wanted to learn and experience something different whilst at the same time developing his work and life-skills. Able to work exceptionally well under his own initiative Will has been tasked with projects and fundamental business responsibilities as well as taking an involved role when hosting events, making himself an asset in the day to day running of the Trelonk site.

Since leaving the Foundation to return to his university studies Will has achieved a degree in Finance and has since accepted a graduate role with Hall Hunter Partnership based in Reading so he can work towards his chartered accounting qualifications, we will miss his cheerful smile and willingness to help no matter what is thrown at him.

Robyn Pedley

Business Administration Intern to Marketing Assistant for Parnall Group – Age 19

From: Penryn, Cornwall

Robyn joined the team at the beginning of September 2018 initially as an Intern in our Business & Administration team, having completed an Extended Diploma in Business.

Having worked in several departments within Parnall Group, Robyn has gained a wide understanding of the different departments and is known for her excellence in dealing with customers as well as her organisational skills.

Her interest in marketing has led her to develop a role supporting the Group marketing activity including developing content for the social media channels, e-newsletters and website.

Jack Marchant

Estates Trainee to HGV Driver – Age 24

From: Truro, Cornwall

Jack joined the Estates team at Trelonk in October 2018 and has been quickly learning the ropes. Originating from a farming background he is no stranger to working outdoors in all weathers having worked in fencing and farming previously.

A keen member of the Falmouth Young Farmers Club, Jack came to Trelonk in order to develop his skills and experience which included estate management. He has plans to have his own farm one day with a diverse mix of holiday lets, livery yard and other options to build a strong, successful business. Jack left the Parnall Foundation for a trip to New Zealand in order to experience the contrast of the way farms work down under.

Hannah Beard

Hospitality Assistant to Sports Science Nutritionist – Age 21

From: Truro, Cornwall

Hannah joined our Hospitality team in June 2018, having worked previously as an apprentice at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen Cornwall at Watergate Bay. Keen to develop her knowledge in catering and hospitality, she hopes to achieve a managerial role in a Cornish restaurant long term. 

Hannah’s favourite part of working at Trelonk is working in a such a “naturally beautiful environment”. Since leaving the Parnall Foundation Hannah has gone on to university in Plymouth to study Food Nutrition and Exercise Science after discovering an added passion for all things weightlifting.

Bradley Mills

Horticulture Trainee to Horticulture Apprentice – Age 21

From: Bodmin, Cornwall

Bradley is another young person who having benefited from his experience and training at Trelonk is now carving a career in his chosen area of garden design & landscaping at a nearby country estate. Having previously worked as a personal assistant for children, Bradley decided he wanted a change in career.
Whilst at Trelonk, Bradley was a hard-working member of the team whose passion for all things plant kept him busy.

Having completed his Level 2 qualification in Horticulture as well as his Silver Parnall Foundation award, Bradley is now working towards his Level 3 whilst working at Trewarthenick.

Cory Marchant

Aviation Intern to Engineering Apprentice for PALL Aerospace – Age 19

From: Truro, Cornwall

Cory joined the team here at Parnall during January 2018. Cory had previously studied forensic science in college and came to us with an unsureness of his career direction. After initially joining our estates team, it wasn’t long before he realised his practical hands-on skills could also be used in our hangar, spiking an interest towards engineering.

Cory then continued an 8-month internship within our Aviation department in which he gained vital skills and knowledge basics for engineering. Towards the end of his time with us, Cory accepted a 4-year position with PALL Aerospace and Industrial where he has completed his Level 2 welding and riveting course, and is working towards his Level 3 Sheet Metal course.

Jodie Bell

Business Administration Intern to Procurement Apprentice for Tregothnan Estate – Age 20

From: Feock, Cornwall

Jodie joined us in November 2018, having previously worked in several retail outlets, wanting to gain more experience and knowledge in a business administration role to support her college Diploma.

The changing demands of the business support required here enables Jodie to gain experience in a range of areas of business. Her role includes reception duties, updating human resources records, managing stock, arranging schedules and liaising with our guests. Jodie has used these aspects to help determine a direction for her future career which she is hoping will be in the management sector.

KAREN PACKHAM – HORTICULTURE APPRENTICE

Karen is a young person with a passion for all things in the garden but has a special interest in fungi… that’s mushrooms to the rest of us! As a horticulture apprentice in the ever-changing grounds at Trelonk, Karen has been able to adapt to a demanding environment taking the opportunity to turn her passion into a project as part of her work role.

Karen is now working with a local gardening and landscaping business and long term hopes to set up her own company offering these services to the local area.

Lawrence Bysouth

Realising that the skills achieved in aviation could lead to opportunities in the hugely demanding world of motorsport Lawrence decided that an Aviation Apprenticeship would be a great career choice for him.

With his main passion being motorsport, Lawrence has been able to have many new experiences at Parnall Engineering including a trip to Bahrain to be part of the Aston Martin World Endurance Racing team.

Jodie Bell - Business Administration Intern

Murphy Ransley-Miles

Murphy is a talented young man, whose skills include engineering, martial arts and gliding. He’s also a sergeant in the air training core.

But his passion is in historic aircraft, so when the opportunity to be an apprentice rebuilding Spitfires came up Murphy didn’t hesitate to show his desire to get involved. The Parnall team have created a once in a lifetime opportunity for Murphy to work on his passion project.

Callum Riley

Callum Riley is an approachable and friendly individual and is always striving to be helpful and supportive.  Callum started early January of 2018 and started a historical project researching into the family history of Mark Parnall, Founder of Parnall Advanced Engineering Limited and the Parnall business throughout the centuries.

During his research period he uncovered the vast history surrounding the Parnall family name, he has developed and grown his skillsets and experience in the real world. He wishes to pursue a career in historical research and make a name for himself within the historical community and industry and has recently moved to Bristol to pursue these ambitions. His work on the Parnall history still continues.

HARRIET INGLIS – HORTICULTURE APPRENTICE

Harriet joined the Trelonk team in October 2018, having previously worked at a nearby estate. With ambitions to run her own market garden, she is busy gaining more practical experience. She loves working outdoors and when her family moved to Cornwall to a house with land available to grow vegetables and flowers, she jumped at the chance to experiment.

Her work at Trelonk has been pretty varied and as well as pruning, weeding and propagating, she attends college one day a week to learn more about the science of planting. She is also busy planning the planting for next year and we look forward to seeing the results of her hard labour.

Our Programmes

Introduction to Work

A one day taster of the workplace working with our project teams. We will also signpost you to future opportunities to help you progress your career plans.

During the day you will spend time with a project team and receive support with employability skills.

Available to anyone aged 17-25 years looking for an introduction to the workplace.

Work Experience Placement

A five day work placement to give you a taste of an area of work and produce a show piece to demonstrate the skills learnt whilst working with our project teams.

You will also receive support with employability skills and signposting towards future opportunities to help you progress your career plans.

Available to anyone aged 17-25 years old particularly those not in education, employment or training. 

Traineeship

A three to six months work placement to unlock your employment potential and prepare you for your chosen career.

Working with our project teams, this will help you to build skills and demonstrate a level of experience to potential employers.

Available to anyone aged 17-24 years old, particularly those not in education, employment or training.

Apprenticeship

A minimum of one year course based in the work place whilst working to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

Working with one of our project teams, you will gain practical experience related to your qualification to improve your employability and demonstrate your skills in the workplace.

Available to anyone aged 18-25 years old particularly those not in education, employment or training.

Internship

A one to twelve month course designed for under graduates or recent graduates to enhance their educational qualifications with practical work based experience.

Working with our project teams, this will enable you to focus on making the right choices to develop your career.

Available to undergraduates on a gap year, prior to starting employment or further studies, those looking for an industry placement or recent graduates.
